Forêt de la Frachas

24 July 2021

Today Detti and I are going from our first walk post Detti wiped out days. She feels ok, so, off we go! And this is a surprisingly long hike, I forgot about the long fire trail that we have to follow first! So it ends up being a nearly 12km walk with about +500m of up hill (probably a bit more).

But, even though by lunch time D is exhausted, food gives her a second wind (and a third, and fourth, and fifth with each snacks later on!) and so, while we do not make it all the way to the plateau, we do make it to an amazing (and amazingly cold) waterfall!

Well done D for this trial of fire! It is a great sign of better times to come!!!

Valley of Water and more

23 February 2018

Detti and I take Belle with us, and we drive to the mountains for a nice day of wander. We started with the Valley of Water, in Wentworth Falls, but the track was cut short as the rangers are working on some part of the walk. So we explored a bit around, finding some very nice little spots less travelled.

We then drove to do another short walk, to Hanging Rock. What a view! And while she didn’t go too close to the edge, Belle fought her fear of heights to still enjoy the amazing vista.

Birds and Blue Mountains

1 September 2018

Penny having just come back from France with a little frog, she organized a weekend away in the Blue Mountains, and Detti Hemant and I were invited. We joined the fun, and had the surprise of an awesome welcome party at the AirBnB we were staying at: Birds. Plenty of birds, which came to us for a feed, and to the delight of our French guest, and our Indian flatmate.

Once we left the birdies to their day, we went for a short walk along side one of the many little stream that one can enjoy in the area, and came back some time later for some more bird watching.

Waterfall to Heathcote

DSC04653

22 September 2018

This weekend, Detti, Hemant and I decided to go for a little hike and camp the night. The walk is only about 11km, and can easily be done in a day, but there are a few very nice spots to spend the night, so that is exactly what we did!

Waterfalls

DSC0630119 January 2017

Today is the waterfalls day. We go from one to the other, and enjoy the sight of them. Some small, some big, some strong, some more discreet, from above or bellow, there is something captivating about water in movement.

We went to Nelson’s Falls, and the Russel Falls group.

Montezuma Falls

DSC0619718 January 2017

Our main destination today is Montezuma Falls, one of the tallest in Tasmania.

A short walk which follows an old train tracks, in the middle of the rainforest, leads to it. Green overdose. The forest is luxuriant, lush, vibrant. Water is sipping everywhere, feeding this green giant carpet.

The waterfall is really tall. Lost high above us, a ridge far from our reach.

We then keep driving South, slightly West, and pass near the old mining site of Iron Blow which offer interesting colors of rocks and lake. And we finish in a camping site by the cold and beautiful Burbury lake.

Here is the full Gallery

DSC0089315 December 2016

Today is a much more chilled day. We are first to go to “Italiano” and set up camp, and then, with only a little day pack, we will go up the Valley de Frances, which is supposed to offer beautiful amazing views. While it will still be quite a few kilometers to walk, the prospect of leaving our big heavy packs behind and go light for the rest of the day is very inviting.

We have soon covered the few kilometers separating the camp “Frances” to the “Italiano” one, and we find a nice spot to pitch our tents. It is currently quite empty as it is quite early and you are only supposed to stay one night there, to be sure that everyone has a chance to do that. Which is another thing we didn’t really factor in our plans of this trip. Oh well, it was a right choice to stop in “Frances” as we can now enjoy the valley in our own time.

Today is grey, slightly raining. Not especially cold nor windy. Just a grey rainy day.

The first half of the hike up the valley is the steepest. And when we arrive at the first view point, the view is somewhat sad. The clouds and rain are covering much of the valley, not revealing much, and affecting the morale. My dad is almost thinking of going back. But hey, if you think about it, what are we gonna do for the rest of the day? Sit in our tents to avoid the rain? No thank you. Might as well explore, and push on. And we soon get our reward. A big one! We haven’t kept going for more than half an hour when the clouds start to break, the sun shines and reveals the amazing surroundings. We can see deep in the valley, and the peaks on either side, with Los Cuernos showing their different colored layers of rocks, which is especially nice under the sun.

We go all the way to the top viewing point and have our lunch with a stunning view. From there you can see the whole upper end of the valley with all kinds of different mountains around. Very steep ones, like jagged teeth, rounder and greener ones, some covered in snow, some not, a river bouncing around in the bottom, carrying fresh clear pure water. What a day! What a place!

Our walk back is only interrupted by our multiple photo stops. It is hard as any way you point your camera is dazzling.

Here is the full Gallery.

Cathedral Rock, Bombo Quarry and Waterfall

dsc0671621 August 2016

We get up early to see the sunrise in Cathedral Rocks, and then have breakfast at Bombo Quarry. It is a beautiful day, and I am trying a range of new lenses that I bought not long ago. Old type, manual, beautiful bokeh, not always very sharp. I have to learn their strength and weaknesses, so as to not butcher some shots in the future. Hence a long series of portraits of Detti. Which I am quite happy with. Those lens are amazing for that. Less so for landscape or details at a distance. Good to know.

We then go to see a beautiful waterfall in a nearby National Park, and therefore enjoy an amazing day out and about.

Here is the Full gallery

Dramatic Milford Sound

DSC0888430 April 2016

Today Milford Sound is just fantastic. We fly a few times, ticking off many of the required shots. It is just exquisite. So dramatic and fabulous. Being given the opportunity to see that from the sky is another wonder. An amazing place on earth, so remote, and so left untouched.

Really a beautiful place!

Here is the full gallery.

Milford Sound, Rainy side

And what was meant to happen, happened! The weather turned, very sour!

So today, no flying, and we actually leave to go back to the hotel quite early.
