La Cîme du Diable

17 July 2021

So… After some health trouble that cut short our latest hike, my dad is now feeling better. But not up to anything too challenging, he needs something nice and easy. I have in mind the perfect hike. La Cîme du Diable (2685m) starting from the Pointe des 3 Communes (2078m).
A nice walk alongside the crest with views on the valleys on either side. We start early, catching the sun as it rises near the Reodute, old fortification from the late 1800’s. We walk quite a bit before choosing a beautiful spot for breakfast. And then, up we go to the Capelet Supérieur (2598m), the summit just ahead of the Cîme du Diable, which offers a great view on our objective. We make quicly the crest across to the Cîme du Diable to enjoy lunch at the summit, with view on the Gélas, Grand Capelet, Viso, Malédie.

We then head down towards the Pas du Trem (2480m), the more travelled path to do this summit, and from there, along some little lakes to the Pas du Diable (2430m) and the Baisse Cavalière (2104m) where we get back on the path we took to come. By curiosity, while my dad follow the path, a follow the crest, passing by the Cîme de Raus (2160m), heading down a field of flowers to reach the path that we follow all the way back to the Redoute.

After all, not that small a hike. It looks like that, going from 2078m to 2685m, but, the crest is not all straight, and it quickly adds up… 16km and about 1050m up and down. Not to bad!

Mont Bégo

5, 6 and 7 August 2021

This is it, the weather forecast is rather good for the next 3 days, my dad’s health is back to great, I took a day of leave, so… Off we go!

A little 3 days loop thought by my dad, starting at the Gordolasque parking, going up to the Pas de la Fou to cross over to the valley of the Valmasque, then onto the valley des Merveilles with a side trip up the Mont Bégo before heading back to the car.

Day 1: we leave the parking of the Gordolasque (1690m) around 9am, and it is about time: the parking is near full, it is crazy! We follow the main path to the Lac de la Fous (2200m) passing by the Italian wall (see picture from above). From there we reach the Refuge de Nice (2220m) and veer off the main tracks to go to the Pas de la Fous (2828m). I make a small side trip to the Cime Viglino (2910m) with an impressive view of the east side of the Mont Clapier. We go back down to the Lac Gelé (2610m) where we find a small patch of grass to sleep on. As we enjoy the peace and quiet after our evening meal, we are visited by a curious bouquetin. Sniffing here and there, he comes to about 2m of us. before taking a step back and going back to its dinner.

Day 2: we keep going down all the way to the Lac Vert and the Refuge de la Valmasque (2220m), after a small stop, we back track to follow the edges of the lac Vert, Lac Noir (2280m) and Lac du Basto (2340m) before going up to the Baisse de la Valmasque (2549m) where we will come back for the night. We have our lunch there overlooking the lakes we just walk by. After lunch, leaving our big back packs behind, we do a big side trip to the Mont Bégo (2872m), we see quite a few bouquetins with huge impressive horns. A colony of males it seems. The path is really enjoyable, even if at time a bit challenging with quite exposed bits, going around some cliffs, sometimes bellow, sometimes at the top. Finally, the summit, with a small space to spend the night if required, and an amazing view of the Cîme de la Malédie et Gélas, but also the Grand Capelet. Then, we back track to our sleeping quarters.

Day 3: this this the day where we go back. A long way down, first through the Vallée des Merveilles (2170m) from there we go back up, as the fog comes in, to the Pas de l’Arpette (2511m), by then, we cannot see a thing, so, we head down to find a spot a bit protected from the chilly wind and have lunch, then, we finish our walk to the carpark and head home.

Another beautiful hike, so good to be in nature, and climbing those summits to enjoy the views they offer…

Le Ténibre

20 to the 22 of August 2021

Having a 3 days window of rather ok, not too cloudy, definitely no rain weather, my dad and I are off to do a little hike that we had on our minds.

Going to the Ténibre (3031m) on a big 3 days loop:

-Day 1: from the parking de Vens (1580m) we take the main path going to the Refuge de Vens (2370m), it is a real pleasure to see that we have a good rhythm, the differnet hikes from the previous weeks paying off and allowing us, even with our big packpack, to maintain +300m per hour. We stop at the refuge for a drink and a blueberry pie and then head off on a less travl track towards the Pas de Vens. We soon reach the first of those less frequented lakes and stop for lunch. The weather alternating between clouds and full sun, I time it well for a swim in this high altitude lake. So nice. We then keep going, up rocks and boulders to yet another lake before reaching the Pas de Vens (2796m). I do an extra little side hike, leaving my big back pack at our night camp, to reach the Cîme Borgonio (2930m) which offers amazing views of the surroundings, and of our tomorrow objective, the Mont Ténibre, shrouded in clouds that evening. I go down a different way to map down what would be our track the next morning, as from bellow it is not very evident. Joining my dad, we wait the day out and are join by a lonely walker who, just like us, had elected to pass the night in an old Italian casemate that offer shelter at the Pass.

-Day 2: I wake as the light start to shift from the pre dawn, the dark hues of the sky slowly filling with lighter shades. I ponder, and then get up, my dad still about asleep, and head again for the Cîme Borgonio (2930m), I reach it just in ti;me to see the sunrise. What a show! After enjoying the changing colors and welcoming the new day, I head back to our camp to join my dad. We pack and start our way to the Brèche Borgonio (2904m), having breakfast on the way, once we reach a spot in the sun. Amazing view on the Viso, before the Nébia hides it away. From the Brèche Borgonio, we head down to the Lacs du Ténibre (2550m), a beautiful spot to spend a night in peace. Then up an amazingly steep slope, and more boulders and rocks to the Ténibre (3031m). Amazing views all around, the Argentera, the Gélas, Cîme du Diable, Grand Capelet, Mounier… They are all visible. Only the Viso is now hidden away. Then, down the next valley to the Lac Chaffour (2650m), where I can resist another swim, we look for a welcoming spot for the night. The edges of the lakes are pretty nice, but a bit humid and a welcoming site for clouds of flying bugs. We look a tiny bit further up and end up spending the night under the stars (and the full moon) on a small grass patch.

-Day 3: from the Lac Chaffour (2650m) we aim for the Pas du Cormorant, we reach a point were both my dad and I feel like we have to stop. Everything around us is falling down. All rocks, from the tiny pebbles to the massive boulders are not anchored down and want to go down. Without helmet, with our big back packs, we feel it is safer to head back down. We have probably reach 2850m at this stage, only a tiny bit short to the pass and then the summit (later on, we would read that it used to be down on eternal snow… None of it remains). After a breakfast on a boulder in the sun, we go down to the Refuge de Rabuons for a snack, before starting the long way back to the car, along the Chemin de l’Energie, with a detour to the Lac du Fer (from 2350m to 2550m and back down to 2350m), as the track was damaged. No swim today, we are short on time, and the weather is turning. Strong wind and many clouds. A total of about 19kms that day, with about 1420m of down…

An amazing hike, I am already looking for the next one!

Sunrise at Kurnel

7 July 2018

It has been a while, but today, I got the motivation to get up and go witness the rise of the new day. Detti had agree to accompany me, and we both were amazed at the amazingly bright colors on the sandstone cliffs.

I have to get this motivation back and start getting up early and take more sunrise. I miss it. The peace and quiet. This feeling of being awake. Really. Not because you have to, not because of work, or some other obligation, but simply because you want to, and the reward is always beautiful.

Lemon Tree Passage

8 September 2018

This weekend, Detti had planned a getaway weekend to celebrate my birthday but also our 3 year anniversary.

She had booked a lovely AirBnB in Lemon Tree Passage not far from Port Stephen, and we enjoyed a very relaxed tranquil weekend. A walk on the shore, just by our accomodation, spotting a koala on our second day, raising for sunrise (or almost) on our third day. Just what we both needed, away from the big smoke, peace and quiet in a beautiful setting.

Thanks D for organizing this for me(us).

Maria Island Day 1

DSC050159 January 2017

Sunrise is rather nice over the lake, with a fine morning cover of mist that seats low on the water, soon dissipated by the sun as he pops out.

We make our way to Maria Island and we can enjoy the magnificent of this tiny island. It is a natural park. And as such, wildlife abounds. And is not really scared of us either, which gives amazing opportunity to come quite close with wombats.

A delightful day walking around, enjoying the feeling of being on holidays, wondering here and there, taking the time to be amazed at a rock, a tree, a cloud. It is peaceful. Calming.

Here is the full Gallery.

Mountains & Ducks

DSC0370226 December 2016

Our alarm wakes us up, and we quickly gather our cameras, warm clothes, and walk the 10minto find a little protected spot by the lake. This time, I took with me a little surprise for Detti. It took me several sunrises, seeing other people doing it, to finally implement that myself. And it makes such a difference! I took my sleeping bag! I open it all up, and wrap it around Detti before seating right next to her. What a pleasure to feel less the bit of the cold, it just gives another star to this awesome experience that a sunrise is.

And this sunrise is… Mindbogglingly beautiful! What a shame that my dad at to miss that one out of all the sunrise we had on this trip!

It starts a bit dull. A bit of cloud coverage. The same pale blue colors than the others. Oh well we think. It is nice. It is always beautiful to witness a new day. There is something quite magical, mystic, and no matter how “boring” a sunrise is, I always find something comforting, a sense of peace, there is something relaxing, to just stay there, and take on the start of the day. So we are there. Taking on the slight change in colors and brightness. When suddenly…

The clouds take on those amazing bright colors. What was before almost uniformly blue, a bit boring, is now taking on vibrant colors, pinks and oranges, and yellows. It is breathtakingly fantastic.

We seat. In awe. This is our last day up in the mountains, here, in Patagonia, so far from home, and we are witnessing pure magic. What a treat.

The colors keep on changing. They become more pronounced, distinct, the pallet gets smaller, yet more vibrant, intense.

And slowly, they recede, letting the day come to life, without exhaustion.

We back track to the camp and share breakfast with my dad, who looks better, but not great. Before going back down to town, we will go around the lake, there is apparently another view point of the glacier, and it looks easy, and nice. So we leave our bags behind, again having the pleasure to travel light, and walk around the lake. It is not hard, only the wind can at times be a bit pushy, apart from that… The view open up to the glacier. Cerro Torre is back under cover of clouds, this guy is very prude!

After a meal shared next to a big protective rock, we walk back, gather our belongings, and make our way back down the valley. Walking alongside the river, like that first day, we witness the same ducks (they are supposedly territorials, so, I gather they are the same), and we stop for a while to observe them, and take some shots. Those are really magnificent powerful little ducks!

Back in town, there is a little bit of a feel that the holidays are near finish. A nice meal put a bit of balm to that depressing thought…

Here is the full Gallery.

Fitzroy

DSC0311223 December 2016

We rise very early that morning, with a clear goal in mind, be at the Fitzroy viewing point for sunrise. It is a relatively short walk, but quite steep, a quick 300m or so to climb up. In the dark we make our way. In the camp we can hear people stirring, we won’t be the only one there.

The climb is not too bad. Big steps at times, but overall not too challenging.

We are among the first one at the top, and we can chose our space, we found a little protective circle of stones, and set camp there. My dad took his stove with him, I did too, and we make some hot tea. And we enjoy the view. It is still pre-sunrise, but it is not dark anymore, allowing us to take in the scenery, and tall and huge and massive Fitzroy is. There are a few clouds, but none too think or big as to hide too much of the landscape.

It is rather freezing, and Detti is covered with her jacket and mine, with only her eyes showing. She is not going to miss the show!

The sun slowly rises, and starts to shine on the vertical walls of Fitzroy. What a wondrous place. What a show.

We seat there. Look. Take pictures. Admire. With the sun very slowly, of so slowly, warming up the air, thawing our bones and joints.

After a few hours of this amazing show, we make our way back down, our head full of visions of wonders. We have a good breakfast at camp, and leave all behind for a walk to a nearby glacier. The path remains at the same level, with very little up and downs. It is very welcome for a change! The view over the glacier is quite beautiful, a narrow valley opening in front of us, full of cracking ice, a small lake at the bottom.

We make our way back. Detti decides to rest at the camp, which I am very happy about, because she keeps on pushing herself, but I know that her feet have been painful for a few days now, and that she never really mentioned it. I am glad she decides to take care of herself. My dad and I decide to go a bit further, to a nearby lake.

The track is easy, the day rather nice, and we seat for a while on the shore of this lake. Observing the ballet of little birds who fly here and there, looking for little bits of food. I take of my shoes and walk to the water up to my knees. It’s cold. Pure. refreshing. And it feels so healing. I stay there for a while. Just lost in the moment.

We finally get back to camp, the weather is getting a bit cold again, so we decide to have an early night.

What a day!

Here is the full Gallery.

Patagonia – Torres Del Paine

DSC0027213 December 2016

Witnessing a sunrise at Torres Del Paine was on the top of my To Do List in Patagonia. So, my dad and I woke up very early to do so. What time? Not too sure anymore. But I think we started walking at about 3am. Possibly a tad earlier. As “Chileno” is a bit far still from Torres Del Paine itself.

The air was brisk. Not a cloud in the sky (!) which is amazing for Patagonia. Soon we were able to turn our torches off and just do with the ambient light. I think it is something that I took from my dad, this idea that when you can, when you don’t need it anymore, it is nice to rely on your eyes, and appreciate the natural light. We could still see people using their torches. But us, like ghosts or ninjas, we were just walking in the dawn light.

We found a nice flat rock to sit on and take in the dormant landscape. The air was chilly. Not cold yet. The view amazing. A few other courageous people were there with us. Everyone finding their own view point. Higher. Lower. A bit to the left. Or the right. All there to witness the new day.

And what a new day! When the sun finally reaches the top of those peaks, they suddenly glow like lit candles. It is magnificent!

By then the air had become cold. Snappy. This wave of cold air that seemed to precede the sun is quite impressive. On the way down we would witness over and over again passages which were only wet on our way up and were now frozen.

After a while, we decided it was time to go back to the refuge. Pack our tents. Have breakfast (!) and walk with our companions to our next camping ground, “Torres”, the camping ground deep in the valley, at the bottom of that last hard part leading up to Torres Del Paine.

Walking the same wooden path again. Taking in its colors. Its hues. Beautiful trees. Its serenity.

When we were set up though, I was tired. The early wake-up. The heavy backpacks, a bit of jet lag still lingering had me sleeping like a baby, and abandon my thoughts of a second sunrise there. Which is a bit sad, but also actually a blessing in disguise… I should explain that tomorrow.

Here is the full Gallery

J’y reviendrais demain!

Cathedral Rock, Bombo Quarry and Waterfall

dsc0671621 August 2016

We get up early to see the sunrise in Cathedral Rocks, and then have breakfast at Bombo Quarry. It is a beautiful day, and I am trying a range of new lenses that I bought not long ago. Old type, manual, beautiful bokeh, not always very sharp. I have to learn their strength and weaknesses, so as to not butcher some shots in the future. Hence a long series of portraits of Detti. Which I am quite happy with. Those lens are amazing for that. Less so for landscape or details at a distance. Good to know.

We then go to see a beautiful waterfall in a nearby National Park, and therefore enjoy an amazing day out and about.

Here is the Full gallery
