Fire at the Farm

Australia has a very strong culture of fire, and therefore, most properties are regularly cleaned of most possible fuel that could become armful and feed a wild fire and make it harder to control and of course more dangerous.

And so as we spent a few days at Detti’s parent’s property, we helped them in that collection of fallen trees, branches, leaves. And the reward comes after dark, when the conditions are right (namely, not too dry, not too windy), in the shape of a huge bone fire. And the more fuel you collect, the bigger the fire. I was told that this one, even though it is quite decent in size, was quite small compare to the biggest one they previously had…

Falls Creek

Detti and I went to spend the day with her parents down at the property. I played around with my new lenses, enjoying macro tubes to capture details with those amazing crazy bokeh. I also do some test on star shots… What a beautiful sky this is!

Detti et moi nous sommes allés voir ses parents à Falls Creek. Je me suis amusé avec mes nouveaux objectifs et des tubes de macro, pour capturer des détails avec ces bokehs un peu fous. Je fais aussi des tests de photo d’étoiles. Quelle nuit magnifique!

Cathedral Rock, Bombo Quarry and Waterfall

We get up early to see the sunrise in Cathedral Rocks, and then have breakfast at Bombo Quarry. It is a beautiful day, and I am trying a range of new lenses that I bought not long ago. Old type, manual, beautiful bokeh, not always very sharp. I have to learn their strength and weaknesses, so as to not butcher some shots in the future. Hence a long series of portraits of Detti. Which I am quite happy with. Those lens are amazing for that. Less so for landscape or details at a distance. Good to know.

We then go to see a beautiful waterfall in a nearby National Park, and therefore enjoy an amazing day out and about.

On se lève bien tôt pour aller admirer le lever du soleil à Cathedral Rock, suivi d’un petit déjeuner à Bombo Quarry. C’est une journée magnifique, et je teste toute une série de vieux objectifs que j’ai achetés il y a peu. Bien vieux, tous manuels, avec un bokeh magnifique, mais pas toujours très net. Je dois apprendre leurs qualités et leur défauts, histoire de ne pas flinguer des photo dans le futur. Du coup, je prends une série de portraits de Detti. Et j’en suis bien content. Ces objectifs sont magnifiques pour ça. Moins, pour ce qui est de prendre des paysages ou des objets un peu lointains. C’est bon à savoir.
On va ensuite marcher pour voir une magnifique cascade dans un parc national pas loin. Une journée magnifique!

Cathedral Rock and Bombo Quarry

For my birthday, Detti surprises me with a road trip. She plays very well her cards, making me believing this and that before the full scope of her surprises is finally revealed. We traveled south to Bombo, where we pay a visit to Cathedral Rock, a natural rock formation that I had wanted to see and photograph for a while, and also, just nearby to Bombo quarry, a site which I absolutely adore.

She had planed everything in details, Thank you my love for this great birthday spent in your delightful company!

Pour mon anniversaire Detti me surprend avec un petit voyage. Elle joue très bien ses cartes, me faisant croire ceci et cela pour ne révéler le but de notre escapade qu’à la dernière minute. On a conduit vers le sud vers Bombo, où on est allé admirer Cathedral Rock, une formation rocheuse naturelle que je voulais photographier depuis un moment, puis a Bombo Quarry, lieu que j’adore.

Elle a tout prévu dans les moindres détails. Merci mon amour pour ce magnifique anniversaire passé en ta charmante compagnie!

Currarong Walk

Today Detti and I go for a shortish walk in the Jervis Bay area. What is awesome today, is that, even though she grew up in the area, she never came that way, and so we are both discovering these amazing landscapes together!

And a few little things that are quite extraordinary, like this cave that leads from the inside of the land, a nice little forest, on a walking track, to midway down a tall cliff overlooking the water!

I also have a lot of fun with my new macro lens! What a pleasure! Amazing!

Aujourd’hui Detti et moi allons faire une petite marche dans les environs de Jervis Bay. Ce qui est sympa aujourd’hui, c’est que, bien qu’elle ait grandi dans le coin, elle n’est jamais allée faire cette marche, et nous découvrons donc ensemble ces magnifiques paysages!

Et quelques petits trucs bien extraordinaires, comme cette grotte qui permet de se rendre d’une petite forêt de l’intérieur des terres à mi- hauteur d’une falaise surplombant l’océan!

Je m’amuse aussi beaucoup avec un nouvel objectif macro! Quel plaisir! Fantastique!

Bombo Quarry

A place I had seen pictures from and I really wanted to go to is Bombo Quarry. Not far from Kiama, about 2 hours south of Sydney, it looked like one of those places made for photography…

Detti and I sussed it out on our way down, it was a rainy day, so we just walked around in our weather proof jackets, taking in the scenery, and looking where we should come back for a sunrise session.

And this morning, this was it. We woke up bright and early (or rather dark and early), and drove from her parents’ property to Kiama, to be there for the sunrise.

What a place!

Anywhere you look, it’s dramatic, big, with crashing waves on big dark rocks. Quite a few photographers had the same idea as us, yet it was easy to avoid being in each others’ way… And you actually can see the contribution of one of them: a light washed away by a big unexpected wave! Poor guy, he got drenched. But he gave me a different interesting shot!

The last few shots, you can see that I played around with the idea of piling rocks together. It is actually very fun! And I think I will play some more!

Un endroit dont j’avais vu des photos et que je voulais vraiment aller voir de moi-même. C’ est l’ancienne carrière de Bombo. Pas très loin du village côtier de Kiama, à environ deux heures au sud de Sydney, ça a l’air d’être un lieu idéal pour les photos !

Detti et moi y sommes allés faire un petit tour de reconnaissance ; c’était un jour bien pluvieux, et nous n’avions pris que nos Kway, appréciant le paysage, et repérant où nous devrions revenir pour un lever de soleil.

Et ce matin, c’est le jour! On se lève bien avant le soleil, et on conduit depuis la propriété des parents de Detti jusqu’à Kiama.

Quelle magie!

Où que l’on regarde, c’est grandiose, dramatique, des vagues qui s’écrasent sur des piliers de rocs sombres … quelques photographes ont eu la même idée que nous, mais il n’est pas difficile d’éviter de se marcher sur les pieds… Et en fait, vous pouvez voir la participation involontaire de l’un d’eux, une lumière prise dans une grande vague déferlante inattendue! Le pauvre gars était tout trempé! Mais il m’a donne une photos intéressante!

Sur les quelques dernières photos, vous pouvez voir que je me suis amusé un peu avec l’idée de faire des tours de rochers. C’est assez sympa. Il faut un peu de patience, mais ça  vaut le coup! Du coup je continuerai à m’amuser un peu!

Fitzroy Fall

The weather is yet to clear up, but it doesn’t scare us, we drive to the Kangaroo Valley and go for a short walk to admire Fitzroy Fall. The mist and rain even add to the beauty and the mystic aspect of the place!

Falls Creek Waterfall and Sky

We are back down south for a very short week, as we have commitments to go to. On our first day back, or what is left of it after the drive (under torrential rain at time) we go for another look at the Falls Creek Waterfall, and it is quite a sight with all the extra water building the flow! Apparently, when there is very prolonged heavy rain, the waterfalls can join. Waow!

The sky that night as some amazing hues, so I took a few shots of those great colors!

On est de retour dans le sud pour une toute petite semaine, parce qu’on a des rendez vous à ne pas manquer. Le jour de notre retour (ou ce qu’il en reste après le trajet (parfois sous une pluie torrentielle), on va jeter un nouveau coup d’œil à Falls Creek Waterfall, et avec toute cette pluie des derniers jours, le courant est bien plus puissant! Apparemment, en temps de grosse pluie prolongée, le débit peut être si puissant que les deux chutes se rejoignent et n’en forment plus qu’une! Waow!

Le ciel ce soir la a des couleurs fascinantes, alors je prends quelques photos de ces superbes couleurs!

Booderee Botanical Garden

Another day of exploration of the area, this time we go to Booderee Botanical Garden, which is part of a National Park owned and maintained by traditional owners (Aborigine). It is a nice walk among beautiful native trees, shrubs and flowers.

We are also lucky to see a Red Belly Black Snake, and as he doesn’t seem to mind too much, I take my time to take some nice shots of it. While I am taking shots, he finds and quickly eats a little frog! You can see it in the picture!

When we are back that night, Belle, Detti’s sister, is eager to show us a picture she took. I am really keen to show her my picture of the Red Belly Black Snake too. She goes first, and I burst laughing, I turn my camera so that she can see the screen: we both took picture of the same kind of snake!

Une autre journée de découverte des environs, cette fois nous allons au Jardin Botanique de Bonderee, qui fait partie d’un parc national qui appartient et est géré par des Aborigènes. C’est une balade sympa au milieu d’arbres et de plantes du coin.

On a aussi la chance de pouvoir observer un “Red Belly Black Snake” (serpent noir au ventre rouge), et comme celui-ci ne semble pas ennuyé par notre présence, je le prend en photo. Et pendant que je clique, et bien il se fait une petite grenouille pour amuse bouche! Visible sur la photo!

Quand on rentre à la maison ce soir là, Belle, la soeur de Detti, bout d’impatience de nous montrer une photo qu’elle a prise. J’ai moi aussi hâte de lui montrer ma photo de serpent. Elle me montre sa photo et j’éclate de rire, je tourne mon appareil et elle peut voir sur l’écran une photo très similaire! On a tous les deux photographié un Red Belly Black Snake!

Falls Creek Waterfall and Point Perpendicular Cliff

Today we are going to explore a bit the area. We start by a beautiful waterfall just next door to Detti’s family property. With all the rain that the region had lately, it is flowing quite beautifully, and offer possibility for nice photos.

We then drive to the end of the northern point of Jervis Bay, a place called Point Perpendicular. To be on top of those cliffs is quite a sight! A massive drop to crashing waves bellow brings a nice sense of peace. It is really an amazing place! On our way to go around the massive idiot proof fence, we encounter some quite ugly spiders, and because they look like crabs, I call them Crab Spider. It is not their name, but people seem to know exactly what I am talking about. So it should be their name!

Aujourd’hui nous allons explorer un peu les environs. On commence par une bien jolie cascade à deux pas de la propriété de la famille de Detti. Avec toute la pluie qui est dernièrement tombée dans le coin, il y a un bon débit qui offre de belles opportunités photographiques.

Ensuite on conduit jusqu’à la pointe nord de la baie de Jervis, un lieu qui s’appelle “Point Perpendicular”. Se retrouver en haut de ces falaises est bien sympa. Quelle vue! Tout en bas de cette falaise immense les vagues s’écrasent, et ça donne un sentiment de paix. Un lieux fantastique! Quand nous contournions la barrière “anti-idiot”, on a trouve une colonie d’araignées bien laides, et comme elles ressemblent à des crabes, je les appelle  Araignées Crabes. Ce n’est pas leur nom, mais tout le monde voit tout de suite de quoi je parle. Alors, ça devrait être leur nom!
