Valley of Water and more

23 February 2018

Detti and I take Belle with us, and we drive to the mountains for a nice day of wander. We started with the Valley of Water, in Wentworth Falls, but the track was cut short as the rangers are working on some part of the walk. So we explored a bit around, finding some very nice little spots less travelled.

We then drove to do another short walk, to Hanging Rock. What a view! And while she didn’t go too close to the edge, Belle fought her fear of heights to still enjoy the amazing vista.

Newnes Glow Worms Tunnel Walk

10 March 2018

Detti and I took the opportunity of this nice weather weekend to go camping in the Blue Mountains and enjoy a nice walk, that goes through the Glow Worms Tunnel of Newnes. A very varied walk, with some views over the top of the eucalyptus trees, and some passage underground, in the man made former train tunnels, but also, if you know where to look, in some natural caves where a very small stream snakes around.

Kurnel Walk

6 July 2018

When I met Detti, and after exchanging texts for a few weeks, we finally got some common free time in our rather busy calendars, and we agreed on a first date. A walk along the shore, between Kurnel and Cronulla. This walk takes you along the cliff edge for a quite a while, among some bush vegetation, and ends up with a long walk on Cronulla beach, which is deceptively long.

Our 3rd anniversary approaching, we decided to do this walk again. And on this nice day, we left early, with a nice picnic packed, good footwear, and the perspective of a lovely day.

We started the walk by walking straight along the shore, at the bottom of the cliff, while the last time we walked the road as a starter. What a lovely place we discover! We are already planning to come back for sunrise (see next post). We spot (so far at the distance that it is only great in our imagination) a few whales passing by. But then, the cliff top is far less inviting than before, as a bushfire has burn all the bushes, and the landscape is rather barren.

So we turn back. Still a beautiful day, even is the walk got cut short.

Sunrise at Kurnel

7 July 2018

It has been a while, but today, I got the motivation to get up and go witness the rise of the new day. Detti had agree to accompany me, and we both were amazed at the amazingly bright colors on the sandstone cliffs.

I have to get this motivation back and start getting up early and take more sunrise. I miss it. The peace and quiet. This feeling of being awake. Really. Not because you have to, not because of work, or some other obligation, but simply because you want to, and the reward is always beautiful.

Birds and Blue Mountains

1 September 2018

Penny having just come back from France with a little frog, she organized a weekend away in the Blue Mountains, and Detti Hemant and I were invited. We joined the fun, and had the surprise of an awesome welcome party at the AirBnB we were staying at: Birds. Plenty of birds, which came to us for a feed, and to the delight of our French guest, and our Indian flatmate.

Once we left the birdies to their day, we went for a short walk along side one of the many little stream that one can enjoy in the area, and came back some time later for some more bird watching.

Waves

DSC0668022 January 2017

Last day for me of this little Tasmanian adventure. In the morning, we go out for a little walk, to take in a few more plunging view over this beautiful coast line. From the top, we can see the waves coing out of a high arch that million years of crashing waves have formed. Relentless, one after the other, they eroded the softer part of the cliff and made this little channel where the waves can be seen in all beauty.

After that, it is a drive to the airport. And bye bye Tasmania for now.

Here is the full Gallery.

Cape Raoul & Tessellated Pavement

DSC0655821 January 2017

The objective of the day is Cape Raoul, a few kilometers hike, starting right were we spent the night. Easy. The weather has improved dramatically (the last picture from yesterday’s post was taken at exactly the same spot as the first picture of today’s!). We can enjoy the views from way up high the cliffs. It is breathtaking! But then, the nature of the cliff changes, and it becomes so unique and so amazing that we cannot take more than a few steps before wanting to take another shot! And then, here it is! Cape Raoul! It is truly a wonder, it narrows done to becoming rock needles, little pillars totally vertical with perfect flat walls. Some are still in group, while other are now free standing.

This is where we enjoy our lunch, taking in this alien scenery, and also having a look at a colony of sea-lions, way below, visible because they laze around on their own white poo, their black bodies easily spotted as a result of their filthy habit.

We then backed track, returning to our car, and decided to drive back down to the narrow gully of the peninsula, to go and have a look at the Tessellated Pavement, another totally natural, yet amazing and uncommon phenomena, which sees a large flat rock at the edge of the ocean marked by all kinds of very regular geometrical lines. The pictures talk a thousand words…

Here is the full Gallery

Remarkable Cave

DSC0637920 January 2017

Quite a bit of driving today, which is not that bad as it was a rather miserable weather. We made it all the way past Hobart, to go towards Port Arthur and the amazing scenery around there.

On this first day there, we stopped for the occasional viewpoint, and then made our way to the Remarkable Cave. All the way down the stairs, to a small beach inside the cliff, and in front of us a massive gapping cave. We were supposed to stay there, 3 meters off the sand, just looking at this black hole from which we could hear the wave crashing. By the amount of foot tracks on the sand, most people don’t. We didn’t either. The tide being on our side, the cave was dry. But what a place! You enter this cave which almost feels like man made, and it branches like a ‘Y’ with both top branches opening up to the ocean. Beautiful! All the people (and that includes family with kids) which came down the stairs climbed over them to experience the cave. The most dangerous part? Climbing over!

After this encounter with the greatness of mother nature, we found a small camping spot, someones back yard really, just at the start of the hike we wanted to do the next day. Offer of our host? Some Rhupagne, a slightly alcoholic beverage made with fermented rhubarb. Quite nice and refreshing! Nice way to end the mean that night!

Here is the full gallery.

First Days in Sydney

DSC047106 & 7 January 2017

My sister Amelia and her partner Henry are landing in Sydney, and we soon will be going to Tasmania for a few weeks of discovery, little hikes, banter, laugh, good food and great company.

But because they needed a tiny bit more stress to start their holiday, their luggage, the one that contained all their camping gear, crucial for what we wanted to do in Tasmania, has gone missing. Apparently, it is not the only one. And the stress is growing. Will it get to Sydney on time? While the first day is spent having a walk along Circular Quay, and having a look at the Opera House, the second day… Well, we decide to go back to the airport, and even though we didn’t get any call, to try our luck. their luck, to pick up the luggage…

Will it work? As we step into the Oh So Luggage Full room that is supposedly handling the situation, Henry and Amelia spot their bag right away! Relieve! Suddenly the stress is gone, and we go for a little drive down to Kurnel, for a short walk on top of the cliff. Beautiful day for it!

Tomorrow, our Tasmanian adventure begins!

Here is the full Gallery

Mountains & Ducks

DSC0370226 December 2016

Our alarm wakes us up, and we quickly gather our cameras, warm clothes, and walk the 10minto find a little protected spot by the lake. This time, I took with me a little surprise for Detti. It took me several sunrises, seeing other people doing it, to finally implement that myself. And it makes such a difference! I took my sleeping bag! I open it all up, and wrap it around Detti before seating right next to her. What a pleasure to feel less the bit of the cold, it just gives another star to this awesome experience that a sunrise is.

And this sunrise is… Mindbogglingly beautiful! What a shame that my dad at to miss that one out of all the sunrise we had on this trip!

It starts a bit dull. A bit of cloud coverage. The same pale blue colors than the others. Oh well we think. It is nice. It is always beautiful to witness a new day. There is something quite magical, mystic, and no matter how “boring” a sunrise is, I always find something comforting, a sense of peace, there is something relaxing, to just stay there, and take on the start of the day. So we are there. Taking on the slight change in colors and brightness. When suddenly…

The clouds take on those amazing bright colors. What was before almost uniformly blue, a bit boring, is now taking on vibrant colors, pinks and oranges, and yellows. It is breathtakingly fantastic.

We seat. In awe. This is our last day up in the mountains, here, in Patagonia, so far from home, and we are witnessing pure magic. What a treat.

The colors keep on changing. They become more pronounced, distinct, the pallet gets smaller, yet more vibrant, intense.

And slowly, they recede, letting the day come to life, without exhaustion.

We back track to the camp and share breakfast with my dad, who looks better, but not great. Before going back down to town, we will go around the lake, there is apparently another view point of the glacier, and it looks easy, and nice. So we leave our bags behind, again having the pleasure to travel light, and walk around the lake. It is not hard, only the wind can at times be a bit pushy, apart from that… The view open up to the glacier. Cerro Torre is back under cover of clouds, this guy is very prude!

After a meal shared next to a big protective rock, we walk back, gather our belongings, and make our way back down the valley. Walking alongside the river, like that first day, we witness the same ducks (they are supposedly territorials, so, I gather they are the same), and we stop for a while to observe them, and take some shots. Those are really magnificent powerful little ducks!

Back in town, there is a little bit of a feel that the holidays are near finish. A nice meal put a bit of balm to that depressing thought…

Here is the full Gallery.
