Lemon Tree Passage

This weekend, Detti had planned a getaway weekend to celebrate my birthday but also our 3 year anniversary.

She had booked a lovely AirBnB in Lemon Tree Passage not far from Port Stephen, and we enjoyed a very relaxed tranquil weekend. A walk on the shore, just by our accomodation, spotting a koala on our second day, raising for sunrise (or almost) on our third day. Just what we both needed, away from the big smoke, peace and quiet in a beautiful setting.

Bay of Fire Day 1

We spent the night in a small national park with a nice river nearby. In the early hours of the morning we went there for a look, and I enjoyed a nice cold bath in the clear water of a natural pool.

We then enjoyed the drive, stoping here and there on our way north, seeing more and more of those amazing red covered rocks who are so beautiful against the turquoise water around.

The camping that night was quite nice, just by the beach.

On a passé la nuit dans un petit parc national pas loin d’ une rivière. Tôt le matin, on va y faire un tour, et j’ai le plaisir de prendre un bain dans les eaux fraîches et cristallines de cette piscine naturelle.

Puis, on continue vers le nord, en s’arrêtant ici et là, et en appréciant ses rochers couverts de végétaux orange-rouge qui  contrastent de façon superbe avec les eaux turquoises environnantes.

Le campement ce soir là est très sympathique, juste à côté d’une belle plage de sable blanc.

Maria Island Day 2

Our second day on Maria Island is spent in a very leisurely way. A small walk along the beach, a snooze, a swim and once again the pleasure to be able to see from quite close the wildlife.

Notre seconde journée sur Maria Island se passe tout tranquillement. Une petite marche sur le sable, une sieste, une petite baignade, et de nouveau le plaisir de pouvoir observer la nature de tout près.

Cathedral Rock and Bombo Quarry

For my birthday, Detti surprises me with a road trip. She plays very well her cards, making me believing this and that before the full scope of her surprises is finally revealed. We traveled south to Bombo, where we pay a visit to Cathedral Rock, a natural rock formation that I had wanted to see and photograph for a while, and also, just nearby to Bombo quarry, a site which I absolutely adore.

She had planed everything in details, Thank you my love for this great birthday spent in your delightful company!

Pour mon anniversaire Detti me surprend avec un petit voyage. Elle joue très bien ses cartes, me faisant croire ceci et cela pour ne révéler le but de notre escapade qu’à la dernière minute. On a conduit vers le sud vers Bombo, où on est allé admirer Cathedral Rock, une formation rocheuse naturelle que je voulais photographier depuis un moment, puis a Bombo Quarry, lieu que j’adore.

Elle a tout prévu dans les moindres détails. Merci mon amour pour ce magnifique anniversaire passé en ta charmante compagnie!

Sunrise Bundeena & Figure 8 Pool

Today, Detti and I had grand plans. We wanted to start a hike before sunrise, to reach a specific point for sunrise, where I wanted to take pictures of her playing the cello with the sun rising behind her.

And so we left, full of energy, me with my camera bag (full), my tripod, and a chair. Detti carrying her cello, her woman’s handbag (which contains everything and nothing) and a bag with a few different clothes option for those shots.

And we start our walk, and witnessed something quite interesting. I had seen it before, and so wanted to show it to Detti. If you wear a head torch in the dark, you will see tiny shiny spots on the ground. I long thought it was the light on droplets of water, dew, or else. But not at all. It is your light alright, but reflected on the eyes of spiders! Detti couldn’t believe me, but when I started to be able to point at every tiny spider on the side of our path, she had to believe me! We kinda knew where we were going. And that is were the trouble started. We kinda knew. We started all right, but in the dark, we took a wrong turn, and after a while, I was quite certain we were on the wrong path. Google God Map showed us that indeed we had taken a wrong turn.

We backed track, and found that the track we wanted to take was actually being worked on and therefore was closed…

So much for this great plan of ours. We went back to the car and drove not far from there to a small beach to witness the sunrise. Not the best, but hey, after all, this was Plan B of the last minute!

After a breakfast, and dumping home all the things we didn’t need anymore, we went for a second place that we had meant to go and see for a while now. The Figure 8 pool in the Royal National Park. After a couple of hours walk, we got to it, just in time as soon the place would be swamped by tourists, without the least consideration for others who might want to enjoy a bit this beautiful place…

Oh well, we will be back! At least we went there, enjoyed a nice hike in the National Park, a bit of fresh air, beautiful nature… A great day all together!

Aujourd’hui, Detti et moi avons de grands projets! On veut aller prendre des photos au lever du soleil, dans un lieu accessible après une petite randonnée, et pour compliquer un peu tout : je veux prendre des photos de Detti jouant de son violoncelle! Alors on se lève très tôt, et on part chargés comme deux petites mules pour aller prendre nos photos. J’ai mon sac photo, plein, avec mon trépieds, des lumières, et une chaise pour ma violoncelliste préférée. Detti, elle, porte son violoncelle, son sac à main (qui comme pour tout spécimen de la gente féminine, contient un peu tout et rien), et aussi un sac de vêtements pour des options pour les photos.

On s’attaque à notre petite rando dans le noir le plus complet. Et je peux observer un phénomène assez marrant, que j’avais déjà vécu, et que je peux donc montrer à Detti. Quand on marche de nuit avec une lampe au front, on peut parfois voir de petits objets brillants au sol un peu partout. J’ai longtemps cru que c’était ma lumière réfléchie dans de petites gouttes d’eaux, genre gouttes de rosée. Mais pas du tout! C’est ma lumière, certes, mais réfléchie dans les yeux des araignées! Detti ne me croit pas. Elle pense que je me moque d’elle. Mais quand, sans jamais me tromper je peux lui pointer des petites araignées, les unes après les autres… Elle est bien obligée de me croire!

Le temps passe, et on avance sur le chemin qu’on connait plus ou moins. Plus ou moins… C’est là notre problème! Apres un petit moment, j’ai bien l’impression que l’on ne marche pas dans la bonne direction. Je finis par invoquer le Dieu Google Map, qui me confirme que on s’est égarés. Nous rebroussons chemin et trouvons le chemin que l’on devait prendre. Il est impraticable, fermé pour cause de réparation…

Alors on retourne à la voiture, et on va se garer pas loin d’une petite plage à proximité, pour admirer le lever de soleil. Pas top, mais bon, c’est un plan B de dernière minute, alors…

Après un petit dej à la maison, nous vidons la voiture (et nos sacs) de tout ce dont on n’a plus besoin, et on repart pour notre deuxième objectif. La Figure 8 piscine de roche du Royal National Park. On voulait y aller depuis un moment, et là, on se décide. La marée est bonne, les vagues aussi, alors c’est parti ! Après une marche bien sympathique dans le parc national, on arrive juste un peu avant un groupe de touristes. On a le lieu pour nous pour environs 5 minutes. Après, c’est envahi. Pas grave, on reviendra !

Une journée bien splendide en pleine nature. Et en très bonne compagnie!

Karekare beach

We spend most of the morning driving north west, to make our way towards Auckland, and we are pretty glad we drove as much as we did the previous day as it leaves us with a couple of hours to go and have a look at those black sand beaches of the West coast.

We decide to travel to Karekare beach, which seems very pretty, and not too far from Auckland, and the campervan rental place and airport.

Passing some nice Auckland suburbs, we end up in a national park, and after a beautiful drive down the hill in a very vibrant forest, we arrive at Karekare beach. We enjoy a quick lunch on a patch of green grass, and make our way to the shore.

The sand is indeed black. Not exactly as black as I thought it would, but definitely black enough to be very different, and to stack on the heat from the sun and make it unbearable to walk barefoot.

We don’t have much time, and after a little walk, it is soon time to head off. By then, we are almost rushing, making it with not much spare time to the campervan place, which then drop us to the airport where we are just on time to board our plane.

One thing is for certain: we didn’t loose one minute today!

On conduit toute la matinée vers le nord ouest, en direction d’ Auckland, bien contents d’avoir autant roulé le jour précédent, ce qui nous permet de profiter d’environ deux heures pour aller jeter un œil aux plages de sable noir de la côte ouest.

On se décide pour la plage de Karekare, qui a l’air bien jolie, et qui n’est pas trop loin d’Auckland, de la boite de location du camping car, et de l’aéroport.

On traverse quelques quartiers bien sympas d’ Auckland, et on arrive dans un parc national, sur une route magnifique qui descend vers le bord de mer au milieu d’une forêt aux verts luxuriants. On arrive sur le petit parking de Karekare. On déguste notre déjeuner sur un lit d’herbe bien verte avant de s’aventurer sur la plage.

Le sable est en effet noir. Pas aussi noir que ce que je pensais, mais assez noir pour que ce soit bien différent et que  le sable emmagasine la chaleur du soleil au point qu’il ne soit pas possible d’y marcher pieds nus.

On n’a pas beaucoup de temps, et après une petite marche, il est grand temps de repartir, au pas de course !  On arrive a l’agence de location un peu à la bourre, et quand ils nous déposent à l’aéroport, on a juste le temps d’embarquer!

Ce qui est sûr, c’est que l’on n’a pas perdu une seule minute ce jour- là!

Sunrise Turrimeta Beach – Missed!

Well, I woke up a bit too late, I still drove there, thinking that I might still make it just on time. And, I didn’t. Still, it is a nice place to be early in the morning, and I thought I might as well also try to get an idea of where would be best for the next morning. It is a beautiful spot. I will be back, and back again!

Et bien, je me suis levé un peu tard, j’ai quand même fait le trajet, en espérant que peut-être je serais juste à l’heure. Et bien non ! Mais c’est une plage magnifique à cette heure là, et du coup, j’ai un peu repéré les lieux pour le prochain lever de soleil. C’est un lieu splendide. j’y reviendrai. Et pas qu’une fois!
